NEW DELHI: The

Supreme Court

on Friday asked the Centre and the

Assam

government to take steps to “forthwith” shift Assam-Meghalaya cadre IAS officer

Prateek Hajela

, who as coordinator of Assam’s

National Register of Citizens

had published the final

NRC

, to Madhya Pradesh.

In the presence of Hajela, attorney general KK Venugopal and solicitor general Tushar Mehta, a bench of Chief Justice

Ranjan Gogoi

and Justices SA Bobde and RF Nariman said, “We order the inter-cadre transfer of Hajela to the state of MP on deputation for the maximum period permissible under the relevant rules/regulations. The notification consequent to the above direction will be issued by the competent authority of the Union of India/state government forthwith and in any case within seven days from today.”

Venugopal asked, “Is there any cause or reason for the court to pass this order?” The CJI-led bench said, “Can there be any order without cause or reason?” However, lawyers speculated the SC might have taken this step because Hajela could have received threats owing to stiff opposition from certain quarters to the final NRC.
